Ian Hagmann

I think the role of teachers in our society is to help students achieve their potential and foster a community. I do not think that teachers simply need to impart knowledge on students but teach them the skills to thrive. Skills such as critical thinking or arguing from evidence have applications in every field.”

Ian’s Story

Teaching Disciplines

Physics, Chemistry, and Geology

Why Science

“I studied geology in college and graduate school because I found the interdisciplinary knowledge required made for incredibly interesting questions. Every research question was multifaceted and you had to think about it from multiple angles. I focused on geochemistry but since I studied volcanoes I needed to learn a lot of physics as well.”

Professional Experience

Before beginning his teaching career, Ian worked as the mineral separation lab manager and as a teaching assistant for “Intro Geology” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth” at Stanford University. Also, he worked as a chemistry and math tutor.

Ian began teaching at San Lorenzo High School during the 2017–2018 school year.

Hobbies

Ian enjoys hiking and volcanoes; he once hiked around a volcano in Hawaii.
