Using 3D Printers to Enhance Biology Experiments

Teaching Fellow Ali Sayed’s school revamped its biology curriculum to better align with Next Generation Science Standards. During his research, Ali discovered how 3D printing and computer-aided design could transform student experiments, modeling, and application of knowledge. He successfully requested funding from Knowles to purchase a 3D printer and filament, benefiting 3 teachers and 150 students. His students used the printer to create parts for hydroponic systems they designed to grow plants, and throughout the semester, they refined or redesigned their systems. They also printed molecular models to support their learning. Looking ahead, Ali plans to incorporate design and engineering into every unit.
