A Year at the Knowles Teacher Initiative

Summer

During the last full weekend of July, we host the annual Knowles Summer Meeting. This three-day meeting, which is usually held in Philadelphia, is the official start of each Fellowship year. The Knowles Summer Meeting brings together community members—typically around 250 participants—to interact with, learn from and provide critical feedback to each other, within a variety of settings and structures. Five cohorts of Teaching Fellows attend the meeting, plus the cohort that is transitioning to Senior Fellow status, along with Senior Fellows who are engaged in specific activities related to the meeting (such as the Coaching Institute), staff and other experts in math and science education. Following the conclusion of this meeting, staff begins preparations for fall cohort meetings.

Fall

We support Fellows at the start of another academic year with mentoring and coaching. Additionally, cohort meetings are held in the fall. These these two-day, in-person professional development meetings are designed to facilitate teacher learning and community-building.

Winter

Shortly after fall meetings wrap-up, the Teaching Fellowship application portal closes and staff begin the process of reviewing applications and preparing for interview weekend, which takes place in early March. In addition to providing mentoring and coaching to Fellows, staff begins preparations for spring cohort meetings.

Spring

Each spring, we welcome our newest cohort of Teaching Fellows. They begin their Fellowship with a two-day orientation where they learn about the culture and norms of the Knowles Teacher Initiative, explore the processes and power of practitioner inquiry, and learn how to be critical friends to each other and colleagues. Additionally, cohort meetings are held in the spring. Like fall cohort meetings, these two-day, in-person professional development meetings are designed to facilitate teacher learning and community-building. Spring also marks the opening of the application portal for the next year’s Teaching Fellows Program.
