Teaching is the art of embracing change while staying grounded in relationships.”
Angela’s Story
Teaching Discipline
Biology
Why Biology
“I teach biology to engage students in the dynamic process of science, showing that knowledge is ever-evolving. Through primary literature and journal club discussions, students become critics and witnesses to this change. They learn to question how we know what we know. I want them to see themselves as part of the scientific process—as contributors to our understanding of the world.”
Professional Experience
Angela has been a public school educator for over a decade. She has enjoyed mentoring student teachers as well as learning something new every year to tweak her practice. Lately she has been trying to figure out how to speak less in the classroom so her students can speak more. Along these lines, students in her class have been running journal clubs in which they choose, read, and discuss research papers on a regular basis, just as advanced undergraduates or PhD students do to sharpen their scientific thinking skills.
Hobbies
It’s funny to think about what spare time was to me, now that I have two kids. I used to travel on my own, train for marathons, and make art. I still love chatting with people with different professional skills from me, and finding the common thread that we might share.
