Science is all about debating and refining models of the world. With a set of eyes and ears, you can make observations about science; add a set of hands and you can actually do science.”
Oliver’s Story
Teaching Discipline
Chemistry
Why Chemistry
“Chemistry was my favorite subject in high school. I liked how it could connect to almost any discipline in science—biology, physics, geoscience, materials science, and even computer science.”
Professional Experience
Before beginning his formal teaching career, Oliver worked as a science educator in public, charter, and private settings during his undergrad summers. Oliver has now been teaching chemistry at Hayward High for the past three years and has taken on different responsibilities outside of teaching. From coordinating and choreographing the staff dance at the annual school rally to coaching badminton and leading a committee on inclusive practices, Oliver has seen how his teaching and leadership extend beyond the classroom. During the summers, Oliver has been an instructor at Summer Discovery and Johns Hopkins CTY, the same program he originally was a TA for. Oliver will begin his fourth year of teaching and third year of coaching at Hayward High School during the 2024 – 2025 school year.
The 2024-25 school year will be Oliver’s fourth year teaching Chemistry.
Hobbies
In his spare time, Oliver enjoys playing badminton, running around the lake, practicing Taiko drumming, singing and strumming guitar, watching anime and Netflix, and sketching with colored pencils.
